Process

Architecture is a complex process that starts from an idea or concept that may or may not be turned into the final result of a built structure or environment.

Mateo begins to talk about process and how it relates to architecture, but I feel that it is done in a very superficial way. Well maybe not quite superficial, but he doesn’t talk about factors that the outside world impose on architecture. Architecture can be a very pure form, but it is very rare that it happens outside a given context which puts certain pressures on the constraints of a project.

The process Mateo gives of direction and idea, establishing hierarchies, and creating space are sound on a conceptual level, but I think he is choosing to ignore aspects of the built environment and the several pressures the built environment places on architecture. While Mateo’s process does seem, at least to me, to leave out aspects that impose themselves on architecture, I do find it to be a good frame work to help spark and foster an idea or concept and follow along in a given direction. However; I don’t feel that what he states is the end all, be all of processes to derive architecture. Process can be achieved in many ways, everyone creates their own process as they have their own ideas and interact with many different obstacles along their process.
